Default: The Student Loan Documentary is a feature-length documentary chronicling the stories of borrowers from different backgrounds affected by the private student lending industry and their struggles to change the system. In 2005 private student loans were exempted of ALL consumer protections. No matter when their loans were taken, many borrowers now find themselves in a paralyzing predicament of repaying two, three or multiple times the original amount borrowed, with no bankruptcy protection, no cap on fees and penalties and no recourse to the law. The consequences are dire, with stories of borrowers in financial and emotional ruin. www.defaultmovie.com A film by Serge Bakalian and Aurora Meneghello

I can’t understand the sympathy for homeowners. You can get out of a mortgage. Not so a student loan. They say the homeowners didn’t understand what they were getting into. How many 18-year-olds understand what they’re getting into?
If anyone’s going to be bailed out, it should be these educated Americans who are already contributing to society.

I’m still paying off a student loan been 8 years now. I keep getting interest relief though so in Canada the government will pay your interest while you do that so I haven’t actually paid my loan for almost 2 years. I don’t know what its like in the States but we aren’t allowed to go bankrupt until 10 years from the initial loan. Even though my schooling never paid off with a good job I will not go back to school again. No more student loans here.

If the government would get out of the student loan business and college students refused to borrow the cost of college would plummet.

So you either have to be dirt piss poor or you have to go to the cheapest school possible to not end up in debt like me. I was a good student and got into top schools….wrong…now I’ve learned my lesson, prestige isn’t worth shit, education is not a product that can be sold, like an ipod or a luxury car, education is more of a need than a want and IT SHOULD BE FUCKEN FREE AND PUBLIC.

Ok look, the only reason financial aid helps you is if you are actually dirt piss poor. Sucks for me, my family is a middle class family, and my father sometimes makes 100-200 dollars an hour and owns two houses, guess wha,t we have to pay almost half of my student tuition which is around $60,000, and I had to borrow half (30k) over 4 years to help my parents, now I am stuck with a 30+k debt…so yes, I know people who were actually in my school that got to go there for almost free.

@stater68 Yes, it shouldn’t be government backed. Why do we flood money into these banks and colleges? They privatize the gians but socialize the loss on the students. That is ridiculus!

Actually the student loans should be made directly with China. Cut out the middle man, the U.S. government, from taking it’s cut.

The only reason college is so expensive is because of these loans.

Probably not half as stupid as you. We are suppose to believe your mom is now 28. At any rate, I will rephrase the question. If it took your mom 10 years to get her degree while she was working, what was the purpose?

I think your momma is an idiot, since it took her 28 years to graduate college. She could have used that money for your plastic surgery.

I don’t know… I am thinking.. why do you even borrow all this money.. I started in community college and went to an affordable state school.. There is military options as well..
And you don’t have to go straight through in college. You can go a semester and take one off, or you can go part-time.. My mom did 10 years of night school to get her accounting degree. Worked full time and did night classes..
She had no debt, it took her til 28 to get her degree, but she didnt owe anything.
